Volleyball Explained

Volleyball involves two teams of six players competing with a ball and an elevated net. The aim of volleyball is to score points by grounding a ball on the other team’s court according to a range of rules. The play starts with a rally by serving the ball from behind the back of the boundary line of the court, over the net and into the receiving team’s court.

The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. They can touch the ball up to three times, but individual players can’t touch the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their court.

The sport is governed by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) which organises all volleyball events. This involves defining qualification procedures and competition formulae for tournaments, as well as more specific details such as player line-up and replacement restrictions, venues and hosts.
